Linda's Homeschool WebLog

I've always wondered how much dogs understand. Research shows we should be careful what we say around our pets.

Here's a scary thought:

"Perhaps Christian parents ought to start planning what they will do if an activist judge rules that their children have a “right” to be taught Practical Paganism 101. From the view of this writer, it’s only a matter of time before such an answer will be needed."
Its a 2003 article.. but I hadn't seen it tonight until I found it linked on the Free State Project website's homeschooling forum.

Now I know someone is bound to take that wrong if I don't clarify this. I am not against pagans... I'm only against parents being forced to teach their kids a government-approved program rather than what their conscience guides them to teach.

I got this great message via email today:

Dear Linda Martin,

You endorsed the separation of ***school*** and
state on JAN 31 01. We've reached 26,591
endorsers, and most are going to be delighted
to read the good news in this email. I hope
you are, too!

Do you want an organization representing 16 million
Americans to take a major step toward separating
school and state?

Would you like to see a national debate about whether
children should be pulled out of government schools?

Both things may be about to happen. And they could
serve as a "tipping point" - the point at which a
sea-change begins and something becomes a trend.

Imagine Honest Education, Separation from School and
State, becoming THE National Debate . . . and even
fashionable in some circles!

Here's what's happening----------

Several weeks ago, a resolution was submitted to a
committee of the Southern Baptist Convention calling
on Southern Baptist parents to remove their children
from government schools.

It caught on like wild-fire. It was obvious something
important was happening, so I immediately consulted
my advisors about this. Should we get involved in
this Southern Baptist's initiative?

Everyone agreed - Christians, non-Christians,
Baptists, non-Baptist evangelicals, and even my
Agnostic and atheist freedom-oriented friends - were
Unanimous!

A resolution of this type from the largest Protestant
Denomination (Southern Baptists) could be a huge step
forward for the separation of school and state and
honest education.

How huge?

* It could swell into a mass-exodus from government
schooling.

* It could spark a national debate.

* It will likely spread to other groups and
denominations.

That's what a tipping point is all about. My advisors
agreed --- it HAD to be supported --- and FAST!

So I got on the phone, contacted the people behind
the resolution, found out what they needed, learned
what was missing from the plan, and got busy.

* The media was already calling (Boston Globe,
the Wall Street Journal, and O'Reilly Factor, etc).
But more could be done, so I contracted for a
media person to book interviews.

* There was no plan to capture names of people who
supported the resolution so future efforts could be
mounted more effectively if this first effort failed.
So I'm working with Jim Babka of DownsizeDC.org to
create a website to capture these names.

* We also started contacting other Southern Baptist
leaders and spreading the word through the grapevine.
In fact, we're building an impressive network of
friends within the SBC.

The Southern Baptist Convention Annual Meeting is
just a few days away - it starts this weekend - June
12. Just today, I decided to go myself to lend support!

So far, I've found three people to help me in Indy.
If you live in Indianapolis and can take the day off
either Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday NEXT WEEK (14th-
16th)--- and want to have some fun --- CALL ME and
let's talk about it: (559) 499-1701 (our special line
for GetTheKidsOut.org).

So here is how you can help --- and it's urgent!

1. If you're a Southern Baptist please find out what
Messenger is going from your church to the Annual
Meeting and ask them to support the "get the kids
out" resolution.

2. Please support us in this effort by making a
contribution at

http://www.GetTheKidsOut.org

Everyone I've talked to believes resolutions of this
type could be a powerful tool for separating school
and state and bringing honest education to America.
So we want to . . .

* Be ready to encourage and support a drive for a
similar resolution to succeed at the next Southern
Baptist Convention if one doesn't pass this time. The
best time to begin that effort is as soon as the
current convention ends, so I need your financial
support to ensure we don't lose the momentum we've
already gained.

* Prepare a plan to spawn similar resolutions from
every group and denomination we can think of. I need
your financial support to develop and pursue this
plan. The faster we move on the heels of the
publicity and debate spawned by the current Southern
Baptist resolution the better we'll do.

I believe this is a major opportunity. If we push
hard with this "resolution strategy" it could be the
beginning of a swing in popular attitudes - it could
become a trend.

No one knows where the actual "tipping point" is, but
I now have a strong sense that resolutions of this
type are the impetus that could get us there.

So now is the time for us to start treating every
**potential** tipping point as if it were the real one.
That way we won't be caught napping when the real one
shows up.

You can help make the difference! Thank you.

Bit much to do by hand. :-)
