Tonight Aaron and I researched sauna building. Aaron watched some Hometime shows about this and wanted to know the cost of a kit. This Finnish Sauna site gives lots of background information.

My 13-year-old son was complaining that he couldn't get jobs because he didn't have a resume... so I wrote one for him. It turned out pretty impressive for a kid's functional resume. He's going to work on a portfolio then we can post the resume on local bulletin boards to see if he can get some jobs. He wants to save money towards an expensive mountain bike.

Aaron chose a new building project - a scow... which in case you don't know, is a flat-bottomed boat, like a barge. He'll be making one big enough to hold two or three people. His intention is to give rides at the eddy next summer.

He got the building plan from this book:

The American Boy's Handy Book: What to Do and how to Do It
The American Boy's Handy Book: What to Do and how to Do It

By Daniel Beard

"An 1890 manual of pastimes which includes instructions for making kites, fishing poles, a blow gun, boats, and theatrical costumes, and for raising dogs, stuffing animals, stocking an aquarium, and camping."

Recently I read the entire forward to him. Our copy has a forward by Noel Perrin that compares boys prior to 1910 with boys of today... sort of a sociological study. Aaron got this book from his aunt a year or two ago. He took a big interest in it when I showed him the plans in the book for building snow forts and houses, after he built the igloos during our snow storm.

The snow is melting now, thank goodness!

My son got a new computer desk. We bought it yesterday at Walmart and he put it together last night. Now I want to buy one for myself! I got him a flight simulator to celebrate having his own homeschool work space.

My daughter got a DVD player but is afraid to plug it in. Someone will have to help her install it. Then it would help if she had a DVD to test it out.

HSLDA has a new article online about the Emotional Benefits of Entrepreneurialism. This is something we pursue in our homeschool too. Career preparation is a big part of our program. Already our son knows enough to start a small bike repair business. It isn't his first choice of work, but will be something he can always fall back on if need be. Our daughter has trained herself to work with pets, but still is not sure what she will eventually want to do.

Early career awareness can save a person from lots of hard times later in life.
