Home School: The Ring: "HOME-SCHOOL RINGS look much like regular high-school rings, with etchings of activities like soccer or trombone on the sides, and maybe a garnet or amethyst in the center. In place of the school name, Jostens offers inscriptions like HOME EDUCATION or DEUS VERITAS FAMILIA (GOD, TRUTH, FAMILY). "
Nice idea, but $390 is a little steep for my budget.

I like the Libertarian Party's education platform:
Libertarian Party Platform: Education
They say: "We advocate the complete separation of education and State. Government schools lead to the indoctrination of children and interfere with the free choice of individuals."
I'm putting a graphic link to the Libertarian Party in the links column of this page today. |
PSD entices home students back to class - News - coloradoan.com: "A new Poudre School District program has found a way to bring homeschool students -- and their tax dollars -- back in to the classroom, at least for a couple of afternoons a week. "
Yes, public schools are desperate to get back some of that ADA funding they've lost because of homeschooling. I don't have much sympathy for their endeavor. Oh, I take that back. The truth is I don't have ANY sympathy for it. Though I admire Annette's desire to be on the school board (see my post about that below) and am impressed that she won... I really agree with that 16 year old homeschool girl (see other post below) who suggests schools are dangerous and don't deserve any more money.
Just one person's opinion...
I'm writing a novel. Its my fifth novel, and the third one I've written during
NaNoWriMo.
The first two NaNoWriMo novels I wrote were middle-grade adventure fantasies. I chose that genre because it would require no research, and because I've read so many middle-grade novels out loud to my children during homeschooling, I'm very familiar with the genre. Also because the NaNoWriMo goal is 50,000 words (during November) and that's a great length for a middle-grade novel.
This time I'm writing a mainstream novel about a homeschooling family in the 1990's. Though a lot of the philosophy is mine, the characters are all very fictional. It takes place at the time the mill in our small town was closed, and I was not even living here at that time. I wanted to use it for a setting because I feel the trauma this town went through should be documented and acknowledged.
I have no idea how people here will feel about it being about homeschooling as much as its about any other aspect of life in this town.
My NaNoWriMo Profile
I found
homeschoolers writing messages in the forums there! A lot of the participants are homeschooling teenagers.

AND WHAT YOU'RE UP AGAINST - an article by 16-yr-old Ashley Anderson about life in public schools. She concludes:
"It is imperative to fight for what is right. The only way to ultimately protect your child from the mind-altering mess in public schools is to remove them and place them in a place where government does not reign supreme: home school, or private school. It is also important that the school receives no money whatsoever. Wherever the government is involved, so is their agenda. If you take their money, you have to take their priorities and goals as well."
I agree with this philosophy and am fascinated with Ashley's writing talent and willingness to spread the word at the age of 16.
Homeschooler Annette Hipona of Daly City (south of San Francisco) won a seat on her local school board yesterday!
